Elon Musk X Sues Music Publishers
Elon Musk's Antitrust Lawsuit Against Music Publishers
Elon Musk's X Corp has filed an antitrust lawsuit against major music publishers and the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA), alleging that they conspired to block competition and force the social media platform to license music at inflated rates. The lawsuit, filed in a federal Texas court, claims that the publishers, representing over 90% of U.S. copyrighted music, used the NMPA to coordinate nearly 500,000 copyright takedown requests for videos with music since 2023. X alleges that the publishers have flooded the platform with takedown notices targeting thousands of posts containing copyrighted music to pressure the platform into accepting industrywide licensing terms. The lawsuit seeks a court order to restore competitive conditions in music licensing and compensate X for lost advertising revenue.
